OXTOX: If You Dive Nitrox You Should Know About OXTOX

DAN discusses the dangers of oxygen toxicity when using nitrox as a breathing gas

By Dr. E.D. Thalmann, DAN Assistant Medical Director; Captain, Medical Corps, U.S. Navy (retired)

It’s a fact: we need oxygen to live. It’s because of the way our cells use oxygen that we are able to breathe, exercise, and even think. In each of our cells, structures called mitochondria take the oxygen which diffuses in from our blood, disassemble it into its two component atoms (remember, oxygen – O2 – is composed of two oxygen atoms), and then hook some available hydrogen nuclei to them to form water.

Case registered against scuba diverRSS

Kalinga Times Correspondent

Kendrapara, Jan 5: The state forest department on Monday registered case against a scuba diver for unlawful exploration of a sunken ship off Hukitola coast on the ground that the exploration was carried out without the mandatory departmental sanction.

The exploration mission had sparked off a major controversy as nationally-acclaimed scuba diver Sabir Bux had trespassed into prohibited Gahirmatha marine sanctuary while undertaking the underwater sea voyage.

“We registered case against Bux under Sections 27 & 28 of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 for illegal entry into the marine sanctuary besides resorting to unlawful underwater videography,” said Prasanna Kumar Behera, Divisional Forest Officer, Rajnagar Mangroves Wildlife Forest Division.

Innovative product adds an HD camcorder to a scuba mask – Gadling

Several days ago I wrote about a digital camcorder that was waterproof enough to take on your next diving trip. Of course, the only thing that could be easier, is if you were able to bring your camera with you on every diving trip you take.

That is where the Liquid Image HD Scuba mask could help you. The mask/camera features an integrated HD video camera capable of recording at 720p/30 frames per second.

The mask is rated for depths up to 115ft, and includes 2 LED light attachments for increasing the color and detail which is usually lost as you dive deeper.

The camera has 64MB of internal memory, but any real life use will require an additional MicroSD memory card which adds 1 hour of space for every 2GB of storage.

The Liquid Image HD Scuba series camera mask will be available in Spring, and the suggested retail price is $215.
